Riley’s Photo Shoot “Take 2″

A few years  ago I had some amazing pictures of Riley and little River taken by the very talented Amanda Jones– the pictures and my books are my only prized possesions. I was delighted to hang with Amanda when she her daughter Sophie, and husband Chris decided to visit the Vineyard this summer on a mini vacation. Riley was lucky enough to get his picture snapped in front of the store! I just love it!!! After our mini-photo shoot of Ri-Dog, Sophie picked a book– a favorite of mine The Secret Order Of the Gumm Street Girls by Elise Primavera, a tale full of friendship, cats, dogs, ruby-red slippers and a yellow brick road.

A new Season brings New Friends and Old!

School is out Yippee!!! Kids from all over the 50 states are visiting the island this year and once again, Riley is making tons of new friends…he loves it! To celebrate faces new and old, here are some great stories that delight in friendship.

Can differences of culture come between two best friends? Find out in Queen Rania of Jordan’s (yep, a Queen wrote it) The  Sandwich Swap. With whimsical water colors, this friendship story explores how lunch– one loves PB + J and the other hummus, can cause a food-fight big enough to test even the best-est of friends.

It’s not just kids who are learning about friends. In author Natalie Russell’s Brown Rabbit in the City, we learn that the excitement of a city means nothing without the company of a great friend. Brown Rabbit goes the city to visit Little Rabbit for the first time, but Little Rabbit is so busy playing tour guide taking them to her favorite spots that she forgets to see the most important “site” of all– Brown Rabbit!

Great chapter book reads about friendship aren’t hard too find, either. Look to author Annie Barrow’s series Ivy and Bean for “frenemies” turned best friends. Ivy and Bean discover their friendship through a series of hijinks and adventures– everything from fossils to bad babysitters bring this two together. A terrific early chapter book with scattered illustrations.

Look to a classic for great friendship between animals of all kinds– E.B. White’s Charlotte’s Web. This timeless story of the love of great pig, the wisdom and wit of a beautiful spider and all those farm friends in between.

Below is a picture with our new friends from Orlando! Riley really loved their cupcakes…

Pink Pajamas are just Perfect!

This book by the very imaginative Vivian French, is one that captures a theme I can totally relate to– little Polly always wants to wear her favorite garment, her perfectly pink Pajamas everywhere. It seems reasonable, until she’s invited to a Fred’s party. Her friends try to help by loaning her things of theirs– sweaters and tutus and socks, but nothing can compare with those smashing pajamas. What’s a girl to do? Lucky for Polly it’s a Pajama Party!! Sweet and totally pinkalicious…

Eco-Play!!

I am so thrilled to have this new Green line in the store. Finally a play dough that isn’t totally disgusting, in case your tot puts it in her mouth. Their mission is simple enough– creative play the natural way. “Eco-kids, brings environmentally friendly art supplies into the imaginative hands of children.” Made by a young mom and dad in Portland, Maine the products are packaged in craft paper with vegetable dyes and come 5 doughs or paints to a set for 20$,with an ingredient list that sounds more like a grocery list than anything else.. flour, salt, cream of tartar, organic rosemary oil, vitamin E oil, soybean oil, coconut oil, potassium sorbate, citric acid, natural and organic fruit, plant and vegetable extracts from beets, spinach, paprika, carrots, purple sweet potato, red cabbage, blueberries and tomatoes. can you beat it?
